1. Right advance, 1st relief, two Sappers and 50men, 2d relief, two Sappers and 80 men, wideningtrench, and thickening parapet wherever there wassufficient cover to make the men work with safetyduring the daytime ; rebuilding two places whereparapet had been destroyed by enemy’s shot, andbuilding banquettes.

The 2d relief the same as the 1st.

2. Batteries Nos. 18 and 19, 1st relief, one brigadeSappers and 200 men, 2d relief, six Sappers and200 men, levelling the terrepleine of former, andthickening parapet, and revetting the latter ; the oldtrench to the left was deepened, and parapet raised

One man of the working party and three of thecovering party wounded severely ; there was nodoctor nearer than the first parallel. No particularmovement was observed on the part of the enemy.

and traverses completed ; the latter had to be altered,as they did not sufficiently “ overlap ” the generaldirection of parapet. During the day one brigade ofcarpenters, half of the permanent miners, were em-ployed in the new communication m to Russian trench in front of this battery.

3. Old Russian trench, fourth parallel, 1st relief,four Sappers and 100 men, 2d relief, three Sappersand 90 men, improving cover, and deepening trench.There is very bad cover and bad ground on the ex-treme right ; blasting will have to be resorted to.One half of the miners were employed in the centreof this trench, to deepen, &c.

4. 21-gun battery, 1st relief, six Sappers and 50men, commencing to repair and revet No. 4 embrasureand one magazine. This party could not haveworked very diligently; the work did not appear tohave been touched when I looked at it during the2d relief.

5. Magazine in No. 14 battery, 2d relief, onebrigade carpenters and 10 men, continuing excava-tion of passage, placing frames for the same, revettingsides with sheeting, and covering in.

6. Small-arm magazine and engineers’ liut, 2d relief,two Sappers and 10 men, deepening excavation forthe same, carrying down the timbers, &c.

7. The enemy was busily employed at about 5 p.sr.in revetting the embrasures of a small 2-gun batteiy,to our right of the Redan, which they have latelyconverted into a 5 or 6 gun battery. It is intendedto fire upon the trench. I do not think that we candepress our guns sufficiently low to be able to fire at it.
