' A party of 40 men were employed in the communi-cation from No. 12 to No. 11 battery, continuing thetrench to where left off towards No. 11 battery ; theyexcavated about 45 yards, leaving 15 yards to becompleted.
A party of 20 men were employed deepening No. 7boyau ; 20 men were employed in No. 17 battery,revetting No. 2 embrasure where damaged by enemy’sfire, and in thickening parapet ; 17 men wereemployed in revetting the Right approach to thefourth parallel; they placed and filled and backed withearth 15 gabions ; 20 men were employed in theRight advance to the fifth parallel, clearing trench ofstone left by miners, building traverses, &c. ; 10 menwere employed on the right of this party, building upwall for miners, and thickening parapet; 20 menwere at first employed in the centre communicationto tho fifth parallel, but after some tlmo they wouldnot work, and reporting it to their officer, on my nextvisit he told me that he would not make them work, so Iremoved' them into the fourth parallel. I do not con-sider the firing justified their refusing to work in theway I proposed. 30 men were employed on the rightof the fifth parallel, improving the cover, and 10 menin a pit z- near it. Both these parties, taking apanic, ran back across the open into the fourthparallel near the place-of-arms. The' officer did hisutmost to stop them, but only succeeded in gettingback four. It was quite an hour before we gotthem back. They say the sentries gave the alarm,who deny it. One sentry, however, went back withthem.
Nothing of importance happened during the night.Musketry was fired on the working parties, but withno effect.
Killed, 3 rank and file. Wounded, 14 rank and file.

The casualties were numerous, though not amongthe working parties.

The Sappers were employed in directing the severalworking parties, and the men of the Line were placedas follows :—
Sixty men in battery No. 17, enlarging it, kc .; 50men building a traverse and altering approach iuQuarries ; 30 men, Right approach m to fifth parallel,throwing out the stone left by the miners ; 50 menrepairing embrasures in the different batteries ; 15men in communication for guns from well to No. 19battery; 100 men in new approach r behind theQuarries, forming it, &c. ; 40 men carrying downengineer stores from park to the 21-gun battery andto the Quarries ; 20 men repairing magazine in No. 8battery ; 20 men carrying down gabions from 21-gunbattery to No. 17; 15 men employed in fourth" parallelat a drain, &c.
The extent of work done was satisfactory.
Buttery No. 20 was armed by tho artillery. Lastnight nothing unusual occurred.
Killed, 1 officer, 14 rank and file. Wounded, 1 officer, 34 rank and file.
