Chapter IX.—Contains an outline of thecomparative performance of the differentavailable species of motive power in theconveyance of goods by Canals and Rail-roads. Tables have been given, explanatoryof the weight of goods which horses canconvey, at different rates of speed, uponCanals and upon Rail-roads; and, also, the weight which horses can convey onCanals , and which loco-motive enginescan drag upon Rail-roads. The perform-ance of the latter will, also, represent theeffect with any other species of mechanicalpower on Rail-Roads, the energy of whichcorresponds with that assigned to the loco-motive engines.
