56. Upon this table there are some remarks to heattended to. In the possessive cases of I. Thou,She, We,You, and They, there are two different words ; as, Myor Mine ; but, you know, that the former is used whenfollowed by tbe name of the person or thing possessed}
aud that the latter is used when not so followed: as.,“ this is my pen ; this pen is mine And, it is the samewith regard to the possessive cases of Thou, She, We,You, and They.
57. Thou is here given as the second person singu-lar ; but, common custom has set aside the rules ofGrammar in this case ; and though we in particular-cases, still make use of Thou and Thee, we generallymake use of You instead of either of them. Accord-ing to ancient rule and custom this is not correct; but,what a whole people adopts and universally practises,must, in such cases, be deemed correct, aud to be asuperseding of ancient rule and custom.
58. Instead of you the ancient practice was to potye, in the nominative case of the second person plu-ral; but, this practice is now laid aside, except iu cases,which very seldom occur ; but, whenever ye is madeuse of, it must be in tbe nominative, and never in the ob-jective, case. I may, speaking to several persons, say,“ Fe have injured me;” but not “ I have injured ye,”
