WHAT happened whilst Apollonius was at Tarsus, ismentioned to his honour. There was a mad dog that as-saulted a young man, and bit him, in consequence ofwhich the youth imitated all the cries of a dog, he barked,he howled, &c. he walked on all fours, making use of histwo hands in running. As soon as Apollonius heard ofthe accident, he went to see the young man, who hadbeen now thirty days ill. As soon as he saw him, he or-dered the dog that bit him to be produced, but the peo-ple of whom he inquired about the dog, said they had ne-ver seen him, as the accident happened outside the wallsof the town, at the time the young man was employed inthe exercise of throwing the javelin. Apollonius next in-quired of his patient what sort of dog he was, who toldhim he knew nothing of him : then considering the casefor some time, he said, The dog, Damis, is white andshaggy, of the shepherd’s breed, and is like an Amphilo-chian dog. He is at this moment standing near a certainfountain which he named, wishing both to drink the waterand fearing it. Go and bring him to the bank of the river,to where the Palestra is :* to do this, you have only to sayI want him. As was desired, Damis brought the dog,who, when he came, lay down at the feet of Apollonius,moaning like a supplicant at the altar. Apollonius madethe dog more docile, by stroaking him with his hand; heplaced the youth near him, all the time holding fast thedog. That this grand arcanum might not pass unnoticedby the people, he declared in all their hearing, that thesoul of Telephus had passed into the young man, and was
