Let us not forget Diogenes of Sinope , andCrates of Thebes, § the one immediately after the battleof Cheronea, waiting on Philip, rebuked him sharplyon account of the Athenians , (of whom Heraclides said,he has destroyed by arms a people too vain of theirmilitary glory) and the other, when Alexander told him hewould rebuild Thebes , said, he did not want a country,which a more powerful man might again destroy. Manyother examples might be adduced in point, but as myobject does not admit of prolixity, I shall omit them ; forotherwise I should be obliged to speak against actionsalready noticed, not from their want of merit or generalapprobation, but from their being inferior to what wereperformed by Apollonius, though superior to what havebeen done by others.
