AMERICAN BRIDGES;

It is a notorious fact that there is no country ofthe world which is more in need of good and per-manent Bridges than the United States of America .Extended dong an immense line of coast on whichabound rivers, creeks and swamps, it is impos-sible that any physical union of the country canreally take place until the labours of the architectand mechanic shall have more perfectly done awaythe inconvenience arising from the intervention ofthe waters. Nature, ever provident for man, has,however, afforded us ample means of remedy.Our forests teem with the choicest timber; andour floods can bear it on their capacious bosoms tothe requisite points. Public spirit is alone want-ing to make us the greatest nation on earth; andthere is nothing more essential to the establishmentof that greatness than the building of Bridges, thedigging of canals, and the making of sound tumpike-roads. Necessity has already produced some hand-some and extensive specimens of Bridge-buildingin the United States , agreeable to ancient models;and we shall proceed to mention a few of them.
