Part I. five Kinds of Columns.

Parts, one of these Parts being the twentieth of the Diameter ofthe Bottom of the Column, this Measure may very well be takenfor the Rule of what all the Cinctures in other Orders ought tohave, and so make them always equal.

I make the Fillet the Half of the Astragal, as is done in theTemple of (Bacchus , that of the Sibyl at TiWi, and that of Concord ,in the Basilique of Jntonine , and the Arch of Septimius : as also ac-cording to what Scamozzj, fialladio, Cataneo , <Csrc. have done ; theInstances that are to the contrary being in opposite Excesses, aswell among these Authors as in the Antique ; and this justifies theChoice I have made of a Medium, which I consider as the mostcertain Rule to reconcile the various Opinions, and different Exam-ples, that are found in Architecture, and which I propos’d to myself to follow through the whole Course of this Work.

AiTEd having seen, in this first Part, the Proportions in gene-ral, of the principal Members of Architecture, comparing those ofthe several Orders one with another; you will, in the second Part,find the particular Proportions of each of these Members, after thesame Method, with all the Particularities of the different Charactersthey have in the several Works of the Antique , and in the ModemAuthors, who have treated of the Orders of Architecture.
