The Ordonance os the Part II.

Third of it in Œalladio ; I have followed him in that, as likewise inalmost all the rest, which is more conformable to that of the Front-ispiece of Nero, than what Scamozgi has given us, who has takenfrom the Corinthian Order, all the Mouldings that are below theModillions: namely, an Echinus or Ovolo, a Dentel, and a largeOgee. The rest of the Moderns have neither follow’d the Antique ,who, in the Arches, of Titus and Septimius, give the Composite Ordera Corinthian Cornice, nor the Pattern of Nero’s Frontispiece: forVignola, gives it a Cornice very plain, not much differing from thatof the Ionic Order. Serlio and ZBullant have made it even morehomely than in the Tuscan Order. For enriching this Cornice, which is not so very suitable to an Order of such Delicacy as theComposite , where the Capital is so much imbelifssd, there must beno want of carving those Members that are capable of it, such asare the Astragal, and the Ogee below the Modillions, the Ogeeand Quarter-round of the Modillions themselves, and the Ogeewhich is under the great Cymaife, which Cymaife, probably forthis very Reason, is adorn’d with a very rich Sculpture in Nero’sFrontispiece, although Carving is not essential to this Part, as it is,in some measure, to the other Members of this Cornice.
