a decided specimen of the species, gathered by Jacquemont in N. W. India , amongBirch, on high mountains, at Pye Pundo. In the New World , the only locali-ties recorded are, Michigan , U. States, and Lake Superior ( Dr. Asa Gray ); Eastside of Rocky Mountains . B. N. America , apparently rare, Drummond ; and I haverecently received, from British Columbia , splendid specimens 2 feet long, gatheredby Dr. Lyall, he ® re f on Bo dar y Commission, at the Cascade Mountains ,

7. A. (Polystichum) mucronatum, Sw.; caudex short thick,stipites 3 inches to a span long densely paleaceous with longlanceolate fulvous scales mixed with equally long subulateones, those at the base intense ebeneous-black, rachis alsostout straight densely setoso-paleaceous, fronds l-li inchlong lanceolate coriaceous attenuated at both extremitiesdensely crowded with horizontal pinnae 1-1^ inch longpetiolate lanceolato-falcate mucronate truncated and sharplyauriculate and mucronate at the base above, the marginsnearly entire or obtusely serrated often villous beneath, sorinumerous in two approximate series, involucres firm, gene-rally black with a deep central depression. Guadeloupe (Grisebach).~A well-marked species among the truly pinnated group of Polystichum, recog-nized by the stout and very strict stipites, with their dense clothing of two or indeedthree kinds of scales, the copious setaceo-paleaceous rachis, pinnae villous beneath,and the singular form and colour of the involucres.

(Polystichum) acrostichoides, Sw.; caudex shortstout or nearly so densely paleaceous, stipites a span longand as well asthe rachis stramineous more or less paleace-ous, fronds 1| inch and more long subcoriaceous brightgreen, pinnre horizontal rather distant petiolate 2-3 incheslong straight or subfalcate, from a broad obliquely cuneatedbase truncated and sharply auricled above oblong acute mu-cronate, serratures setoso-pinulose, fertile pinnae occupyingmore or less of the upper and contracted portion of thefrond reduced in size from ^-1 inch long of the same shapeas the sterile ones, sori in 24 rows near the costa, even-tually confluent and covering the whole back of the pinnae.
