attack, the men, wearied with the muddy march of the day before, were justbeginning to crawl out of their tents to roll-call. Forming rapidly, Fry ledthem at double-quick in the direction of the firing. Having no one to placehim, on coming in sight of the enemy, he took position along a fence inthe edge of the woods, with his right resting near the Mill Springs road. Infront of him was an open field, across which the enemy were advancing fromthe shelter of woodland on the opposite side. A ravine ran through the openfield parallel to Fry’s front, heading near the road on his right, with steepsides in his front, but sloping gradually beyond his left. Before Fry’s arrivalZollicoffer had deployed his brigade, and had forced Wolford and the 10thIndiana to fall back, almost capturing the horses of Wolford’s men, who werefighting on foot. ravine to within a shox't dis-tance of his lines before deliver-ing their fira, and Fry, mountingthe fence, in stentorian tones de-nounced them as dastards, anddefied them to stand up on theirfeet and come forward like men.
A little lull in the firing oc-curring at this juncture, Fryrode a short distance to theright to get a better view of themovement of the enemy in thatdirection. The morning was alowering one, and the woodswere full of smoke. As Fryturned to regain his position heencountered a mounted officerwhose uniform was coveredwith a water-proof coat. Afterapproaching till their kneestouched, the stranger said toFry: “We must not fire on ourown men ”; and nodding hishead to his left, he said, “ Thoseare our men.” Fry said, “Ofcourse not. I would not do sointentionally”; and he beganto move toward his regiment, when turning he saw anothermounted man riding from the
