REVISED
AMENDED
BY GEN. D. C. BUELL.
The topography is substantially that of the original Thom, or “ Official Map” (see p. 508),with some proper corrections taken from a survey made under the direction of Capt. A. T.Andreas, an officer in the battle, and now President of the Western Art Association; andfrom the official map of the Army of the Ohio, made by Captain Michler, Topographical En-gineers
The camps are located partly in accordance with a camp map made prior to the battle byGen. W. T. Sherman (see fac-simile, p. 496); partly from information, original or confirmatory, obligingly furnished by Capt. Andreas, and from other authority. All camps referred to inthe official reports have been carefuly identified
The positions A, B, and C, numbers 3 and 9, agree with the positions of McCookNelson, and Crittenden for “ the morning ” and “ evening of the 7 th ” on the Thommap, and also on the Michler map.
The positions of Terrill’s, Mendenhall’s, and Bartlett’s batteries also corre-spond with those maps
The other positions of the Army of the Ohio are not on the Thom mapbut are copied from the Michler map, excepting numbers 2 and 7, which, with the positions of the Army of the Tennessee, prior to number 4, andbetween numbers 4 and 9, have been determined from the official reports. The position number 4 (roo’clock A. M.) of McClernand , Wallaceand Sherman , after four hours of fighting, corresponds with theirposition on the Thom map for the ” morning of the 7th."
The first position of the Army of the Tennessee on the morning of the 6th conformed substantially to the camps of Stuarton the left, Prentiss in the center, and Sherman on the right. At 4 P. M. of the 6th, McClernand, Sherman , andbrigade of Hurlbut were on the River road north of Hurlbut’s headquarters. The remainder of the army thatwas in ranks at that hour — Hurlbut, W. H. L. Wallace, and Prentiss — was almost exactly in the position, number 4, occupied on the 7th by Crittenden, and the right ana center brigades of Nelsonextending from the western Corinth road
