MAP OF THE BATTLE OF MALVERN HILL, SHOWING, APPROXIMATELY, POSITIONS OF BRIGADES AND BATTERIES.

The Union Batteries, as indicated on the map, were:1 , Martin’s; 2 , Tyler’s; 3, 4, 5, 6, Batteries in reserve ; 7,Hunt’s reserve artillery ; 8 and 11, first and second posi-tions of Waterman’s (Weeden’s); 9—9, Edwards’s, Liv-ingston’s, Ames’s, Kingsbury’s, and Hyde’s ; 10, Snow ’s,Frank’s, and Hyde’s; 11, Kingsbury’s and Seeley’s.

On the Union side the chief variations from these posi-tions were the advance of a part of Butterfield’s brigade, between Gritfin and Couch , and the transfer of batteriesfrom Morell to Couch . During the afternoon Sickles’sbrigade took the place of Caldwell’s, which had comeup to Couch ’s aid and had suffered severely. Meagher

advanced about 5 o'clock, accompanied by 32-poundersunder Colonel II. J. Hunt, which did terrible execution.

The Confederate brigades are placed in the order oftlieir attack; those marked with an arrow were in thecharges or in the front line after dark. It is difficult tofix the positions of the Confederate artillery. In general,12 indicates Moorman’s, Grimes ’s, and Pegram’s; and 13denotes the position of Balthis’s, Poague’s, and Carpen-ter’s. In other positions, the batteries of Wooding (onesection under Lieutenant Jones), Carrington, Harda-way, Bondurant, Hart, McCarthy, and the BaltimoreLight Artillery were engaged to some extent.— Editors,
