The effective strength of Rosecrans’s command is notspecifically stated in the “ Official Records.” According

to the return for September 30th, 1862, his * ‘ aggregate pres-ent forduty” was23,077 (Vol. XVII., Pt. II., p. 246). Prob-ably not less than twenty thousand participated in thebattle. On page 172, Vol. XVIL,Pt. I., General Rosecransestimates the Confederate strength at nearly forty thou-sand and says that was almost double his own numbers.
