The “presentfor duty” in Lee ’s army (including all ofStuart ’s cavalry), as shown by his return for December10th, was 78,513. To arrive at Lee ’s effective strength inthe battle (not officially stated) t here should be deductedthe usual proportion of non-combatants, the detachmentof Hampton’s cavalry brigade, on a raid to the north ofthe Rappahannock, and the cavalry brigade of W. E.Tones serving in the Shenandoah Valley. According tothe estimate of Mr. Thomas White, as given in Taylor’s“Four Years with General Lee” (p. 158), this was 68,500ofall arms. Colonel Taylor (p. 81) says: “ Less than 20,000Confederate troops (about one-fourtli of the army underGeneral Lee ) were actively engaged.”— Editors.
Vajor s (i ilrne 44 ) Hamilton, and T. J. Page, Jr., are mentioned in the reports as commanding artillery battalions, butthe composition of their commands is not given.— Editors.
