UNDER ARTILLERY FIRE, MAY :).
all of the officers and most of the non-commissioned officers and men wei’ ekilled or wounded. The gallant Kirby, whose guns could not be brought up;was mortally wounded in the same 1 lattery \ of which I had for the time placedhim in command, and my horse was killed under me while I was trying 1°get some men to train a gun on the flank of the force then pushing Geary’®division. The enemy, having 30 pieces in position on our right, now advancedsome of his guns to within 600 or (!00 yards of the Chancellor House, whei’ ethere were only four of Pettit’s Second Corps gmis to oppose them, makinga target of that building and taking the right of Hancock’s division in reversea portion of which had been withdrawn from its intrcncliments and thrownback to the left to meet the enemy should ho succeed in forcing Mott’s Rum This flank was stoutly held by Colonel Miles, who, by the bye, had been carriedoff the field, shot through the body. Lee by this time knew well enough, $he had not known before, that the game was sure to fall into his hands, andaccordingly plied every gun and rifle that could be brought to bear on us*Still everything was firmly held excepting Geary’s right, which was slowlyfalling to pieces, for the enemy had his flank and there was no help for h’Riding to Geary’s left, I found him there dismounted, with sword swingingover his head, walking up and down, exposed to a severe infantry fire, whenhe said: “My division can’t hold its place ; what shall I do ? ” To which Ireplied: “I don’t know, but do as we are doing; fight it out.”
