At the time of the battle of Nashville, Forrest, withJackson’s and Buford’s divisions of cavalry and Mercer sand Palmer’s brigades of infantry, was detached iron*the main army and operating on its flanks. Hood rcported that he began the campaign with “an 4 effecti'®total’of 40,403.” On November 6th his strength ' vl * ri44,729. By the arrival of Forrest’s cavalry, on November15th, the army aggregated 53,938. Exclusive of Palmeibrigade of Lee’s corps, Mercer’s brigade of Cheatlmmcorps, and Sears’s and Cockrell’s brigades of Stewnvt^corps, and Forrest's cavalry (not included in Hood’s i cturn), the “present for duty” on December 10 th26,877. These omitted commands probably number**12,000, which would give Hood an aggregate*, effect!'’force at that date of nearly 39,000. But, Col.
