added to his reputation and success in a place whichhad been a stumbling block to his predecessors. Hehad the art of putting himself foremost, and drawingthe general attention on himself, even when, not beingallowed to speak from the tribune, he appeared to havefallen from his best prerogative. Several of his ene-mies and rivals, who had chosen him for the sake ofputting him in eclipse, had the chagrin of findingthat they had added to his glory.

“ He was far from being in good health, and toldme that he felt himself perishing away. I observedthat his style of life would long ago have killed a manless robust than himself. He had no repose from sevenin the morning till ten or eleven at night. He was incontinual conversation and agitation both of thought andfeeling. When we parted, he embraced me with anemotion he had never before displayed. — c I shall dieat the oar,’ he said, ‘ and we probably shall never meetagain. When I am gone my worth will be acknow-ledged. The evils that I have arrested will burst overFrance , and the criminal faction that trembles beforeme will no longer be bridled. I have only propheciesof evil before my eyes. Ah ! my friend, how right wewere when we desired at the beginning to prevent thecommons from declaring themselves a national assem-bly, — that was the origin of our evils. Since they werevictorious, they have not ceased to show themselves un-worthy ; they have desired to govern the king, insteadof governing through him. Now neither they nor hewill have authority ; a vile faction will domineer overthem, and fill France with terror.”

He lived for three months after saying these words,and lived still to triumph, and to add to his glory. Thelast scene of moment in which he displayed his mightyinfluence was during the discussion of the law againstemigration. Mirabeau opposed it as tyrannical andunjust" the popular voice went the other way, andcries were uttered against him. His thunder silencedtheir more feeble demonstrations. “ The popularity,”
