times till they appear more than Half-waytowards the Horizon. Rain, especiallywhen the Drops are large, generally bringsdown the electrical Fire: And Hail, inSummer, I believe never fails. When theApparatus was last electrified, it was bythe Fall of thawing Snow; which hap-pened so lately, as on the 12 th of Novem-ber ; that being the twenty-sixth Day, andsixty-first Time, it has been electrified,since it was first set up; which was aboutthe Middle of May. And as Fahrenheit'sThermometer was but seven Degrees abovefreezing, it is supposed the Winter willnot entirely put a Stop to Observations ofthis Sort. At London , no more than twoThunder-Storms have happened during thewhole Summer : And the Apparatus wassometimes so strongly electrified in one ofthem, that the Bells, which have been fre-quently rung by the Clouds, so loud as tobe heard in every Room of the House (theDoors being open), were silenced by thealmost constant Stream of dense electricalFire, between each Bell and the Brass Ball,which would not suffer it to strike.
