TESTIMONIALS.

by fire, evolves no vapour, and is the opposite prin-ciple to that of steam-generation, evaporation, vapourising, and vapourization, chemicalcomposition, and chemical filled safes. Thecomposition in all of these, on the applicationof external heat of 1000 deg. of Falir., generatessteam.

Steam, unless under artificial pressure, is neithercooler nor hotter than boiling water212 degreesFahrenheit.

All safes, the chambers of which are filledwith alum and sawdust, are thereby made fire-resisting on the combined principle of non-conduction and steam-generation.

Many testimonials must be looked upon like therepresentations of various factories which one seeshung up at the principal railway stations. If thebuilding has ten storeys in the picture, in order toarrive at the proper height, it will be necessary totake off five ; and so with windows, chimneystacks, &c*

* Some weeks ago, on returning home from a journey to the north, myattention was attracted by a glazed show-card at the Derby Station, whichpurported to be the representation of a manufactory in my own town; butas I could not exactly recognise it in its improved and extended appear-ance on the pasteboard, I thought that very extensive improvements andadditions might have been made to it during my absence from home. Onmy arrival, however, I was much puzzled to make the premises representedand the representation agree. At last I discovered that various lofty steam-engine stacks, vomiting forth the smoke of immense works, had beenbrought up from another part of the district, and placed amongst thebuildings of the said factory* Not a bad idea, to give an important appear-ance to a buildinc insignificant in itself.
