In the absence of any drawings or detailed ex-planations in the specification, we cannot tell howthe “ two objects ” were to be effected, and fromthe circumstance of the present firm of Messrs.Bramah and Co. being ignorant of what the patentwas for, we are inclined to think that the intentionsof the patentee were never carried into operation.
Taylor’s Latcii Lock, invented about 1784 .
“ The latch or spring bolt of door locks on thecommon construction (whether mortice, case, orrimmed locks) is very liable to he out of order assoon as the oil is dried up between the tumblerand tail of the latch, from the erroneous manner inwhich the tumbler is made to act; and more espe-cially when the lower arm of the tumbler is engaged,for then the friction is very great, and the bolt veryhard to be moved.” To remedy these defects, Mr.Taylor constructed “ the tumbler and tail of thelatch or spring bolt in such a manner that the lockmight be constantly used for many years withoutany oil to those parts, and always move alike bothways, that is, by turning the knob or handle eitherto the right or left, and with less force of the handin turning it.
“ The alteration which constitutes the differencebetween this lock and those in common use is, thatthe tumbler is reversed, so that the curved side ofthe tumbler acts against two stubs fixed on thetail of the latch and thrusts it easily hack, whether
