The following pages were written at intervals, during the years1842-3 and 4, and printed in a series of numbers in the Journal ofthe Franklin Institute .

The reader will find some slight changes in the values of the co-efficients, which are to be attributed to the influence of facts and ex-perience, which were obtained during the progress of investigationsalways aiming at, and gradually approaching, the truth.
