To the first of these, is reducible,not only the speculation of Theologi-cal truths, but also the pra&ije ofthose virtues which may advantageour minds in the enquiry after theirproper happiness. And these arts a-lone may truly be styled liberal,sen. Ep. Uttœ liberum sacinnt hotninem , quibus88 - cur£ -virtus eft, (faith the divine Sto-ick ) which set a man at liberty fromhis lusts and passions.
To the second may be referred allthat knowledg which concerns theframe of this great Universe, or theusual course of providence in the go-vernment of these created things.
To the last do belong all thoseinventions, whereby nature is anyway quickned or advanced in her de-fects: These artificial experimentsbeing ( as it were) but so many Essays,whereby men do naturally attemptto restore themselves from the firstgeneral curse inflicted upon their la-bours.
This following Discourse, doesproperly appertain to this latter kind.
