Pipiriki to Wanganui, via Wanganui River. 159
tears rolled down her cheeks as the box drifted on and on and on.And she screamed aloud when she saw the taniwha rise, and swallowthe box, and dive to the bottom of the river ; and then she sat down, and covered her face, and cried again.
“But she roused herself immediately when she heard the shoutthat the people all gave when they saw the taniwha rise again to thesurface, writhing and lashing the water with his tail. Then he madefor the land, and came ashore just above the cliff, and there he rolledover and over, and presently expired.
“For as soon as Rangi knew that he was in the maw of thattaniwha , he broke open the lid of the box with the stone, and beganslashing the entrails of Tutaeporoporo with his knife.
“ And as soon as Tutaeporoporo ceased to roll over and over,Rangi cut a gap through his side, and came out into the light of dayonce more, and the first person his eyes saw when they became accus-tomed to the daylight was the faithful girl who had mourned him asone dead.
“ After this great feat, Rangi was covered with honour and re-nown, and presents were brought to him not only by the people fromup the river, but by those from all parts of this coast, even from Tara-naki and Rangitikei.
“ That is all.”
