Twenty-four Parganas as a perpetual property based upon Clive’siagir grant. The sum of Rs. 222,958, the amount at whichthe land was assessed when first made over to the Company inr 757, was paid to Lord Clive from 1765 until his death in 1774,when the whole proprietary right reverted to the Company . 1

The following table gives the names and dates of the British rulers of Bengal and India from Clive to the Marquess ofLansdowne, arranged in three periods; namely, Governors ofBengal, 1758-1774; Governors-General of India under theEast India Company , 1774-1858; and Viceroys and Gover-nors-General of India under the Crown, 1858 to the presentyear 1893.
