Vessels rounding inside are sheltered from all winds. Thelargest vessel that has entered for a number of years wasof 300 tons burden, drawing 14 feet.

At Audierne, near the garden of the Capucins convent,is a circular tower, 31 feet high, showing a fixed white , ca-topric, fourth-order light, 69 feet above sea-level, visible 12miles 15° each side of the line to the lower light.

The latter, 1,203 yards S. 15° W. from the former, is afixed red, fourth-order, dioptric light, exhibited, at an eleva-tion of 36 feet, from a circular tower 30 feet high, on theend of a jetty built on the rock3 projecting from Eaoulicpoint. It is visible 7 miles.

In line the two lead up the channel west of La Gamelleshoal.

To the westward of the light-towers are two white pyram-idal beacons, leading up the Grand Chenal, X. 20° B.

A life-boat is stationed here; it is launched in the port athigh water, at Trescadec at low water.

The bar of the river abreast the lower light dries 4 feetat low water.

It is high water, full and change, at Audierne, at 3 h 15 m .Mean springs rise 13 feet; neaps, 01 T feet.

On Le Corbeau rock, 300 yards southeastward from thelower light, is a beacon.

The shoal of La Gamelle is a little over half a mile in ex-tent, lying about three-fourths of a mile to the southward ofthe river bar; a black buoy marks the XE. extremity, anda red one the west. It dries 6-t feet at low water. Runningto the northwestward or southeastward off the port, the redbuoy should be passed at two cables, keeping the Bee du Eazopen of Pointe de l’Ervilly.

Barzic shoal is 200 yards to the NW, of the red buoy ofLa Gamelle. The bottom is rocky at Ilf feet, and steep-to.

About 200 yards west of Barzic shoal is that of Pouldu,covered by 19^ feet at low water. It extends 500 yards tothe southward.

The Basse Pornic is the most easterly of all the shoals.It is covered by 9 feet of water, and is separated by only anarrow channel from La Gamelle in the NW.

In heavy SW. gales there is a line of breakers all the wayacross from Pointe de l’Ervilly to Pointe de Soue’k.
