five steeples. Boats can land, with an off-shore breeze, inl’Anse de Oabestan, bordered by a half-mile beach, 1 milefrom l’Ervilly point; in Le Loch, a small pebbly bay,miles farther to the westward; at Portzloubous; at Port-zen; and at Brestree, SB. of the semaphore.
On the parallel of Pointe de l’Ervilly, commencing at 3£miles from it and extending to the westward, are a series ofshoals, over which are depths of 22 to 28 feet, with the ex-ception of Les Ninkinous. They are all cleared by keepingPlouhinec steeple midway between the tower and the millon l’Ervilly point, until La Vieille rock (off the Pointe duBaz) is open to the right of Le Tevennec, which last rangecan be kept for the Eaz de Sein. In bad weather it shouldnot be attempted to pass either over or between the shoals,as the sea breaks heavily throughout as well as on the en-tire plateau extending, 1 mile from land, between Basse arC’haru and l’Ervilly point.
All the coast of Pinistere, from the meridian of Audierneto the Bee du Baz, is called Le Cap Sizun.
The Basses Piriou are 400 yards in extent N. and S., and300 yards E. and W. They are 3J miles W. from Pointede l’Ervilly ; over the southern part the depth is 23J feet.To pass inshore of them keep Coumodoc, a large pointedrock in the 3JW., open to the left of Gorlegreitz rock; topass between them and Les Biukinous, keep the right edgeof Coumodoc on with the Bee du Baz. Plougof steeplebearing N. leads midway between them and into Portzlou-bous.
Les Ninkinous are four in number, making a quadrangle,4 cables long E. and W., and 2 cables B. and S. On theBE. rock is a depth of 13 feet, and on the two in the SW.,23 feet. They are 1 mile to the westward and a little B. ofthe Basses Piriou. To pass between them and the Bassear C’harn, keep Le Teyennec touching the W. part of£k>rl6.gr6itz. La Yieille rock on with Le Tevennec leads 6 cablesSW. of them.
The Basse ar C’harn, 1 mile W. by B., is covered by 28£feet of water. La Yieille rock on with Le Tevennec leads360 yards to the southward and westward.
MasclougrCtz shoal is composed of two patches of 5 and6 fathoms respectively, 200 yards apart. It is a dangerous
