And Whereas his system of international literary exchanges isnot only promolive of science and the improvement of literatureand the arts, but is also conducive to the fraternization of go-vernments and the diffusion of civilization through out the globe;
And Whereas the project has been approved by the cham-bers and ministers of France, by the congress of the UnitedStates and the legislatures of several of the States , and by thestatesmen and literati of both nations,
Be it therefore resolved by the senate and house of representa-tives of the state of Michigan that in greatful acknowledgment ofhis desinterested labors in the cause of humanity and for the va-luable works presented by him to the state, the thanks of thepeople of Michigan are respectfully tendered to Mons. Alexan-dre Vattemare by the representatives of the people in legislatureconvened.
Resolved that his excellency the governor be and he hereby isauthorized and requested to receive the parcel of books trans-mitted by Mons. Vattemare through Lewis Cass Jr. Esqr. to thestale of Michigan and also the parcel consigned to E. Thayerand Co., forwarding merchants in the city of New-York, and* toplace the same in the state library.
Resolved that his excellency be and he hereby is further autho-rized and requested to transmit to Mons. Vattemare a copy ofthe revised statutes and session laws of the state of Michigan together with the journals and documents of both houses of thelegislature and such maps of the several counties as are now com-pleted.
Resolved that the state geologist be and he hereby is autho-rized and requested to examine and report to the next legislaturewhat duplicate specimens of the natural history of Michigan arein his department of the University .
Resolved that our senators in congress be instructed , and ourrepresentatives be requested to use their best efforts to obtainthe appointment of Mons. Alexandre Vattemare as an agent ofthe general government to act in behalf of this state , with powerto conduct literary exchanges between France and the UnitedStates .
Resolved that his excellency be and he is hereby requested totransmit a copy of these resolutions and the report of the com-mittee on education to Mons. Alexandre Vattemare and to eachof our senators and representatives in congress.
