frequently taken in its caustic state-as a remedyfor flatulence. Combined with sulphuric acid ;magnesia forms another and more powerful me-dicine, commonly called Epsom salt.

And properly , sulphat of magnesia, I suppose?Pray why was it ever called Epsom salt ?

Because there is a spring in the neighbourhoodof Epsom, which contains this salt in great abun-dance.

The last alkaline earth which we have to men-tion is stkontian, or STRONTiTEs, discoveredby i)r. Hope a few years ago. It so strongly re-sembles barytes in its properties, and is so spar-ingly found in nature, and of so little use in thearts, that it will not be necessary to enter into anyparticulars respecting it. One of the most re-markable characteristic properties of strontites, is,that its salts, when dissolved in spirit of wine,tinge the flame of a deep red, or blood colour.

We shall here conclude this lecture; and, atour next meeting, you will be introduced to asubject, totally different from any of the preced-ing.
