And this last Ac-count seems the more authentick, as it refers to a very cir-cumstantial Note at the Bottom of the Page, which speci-fies the particular Time and Place of his Interment. P Tisthere said that he was buried in the Chancel of St. BennettChurch, near St. Paul’s, Wharf, in London , on the 1 6th ofJune , 1652. His Monument was placed on the NorthWall, at some Distance from his Grave, and was much de-faed by the great Fire of London , which broke out in theYear 1666,
We have already observed, that Mr. Jones’s Book wasnot publish’d in his Lise-time. This Office was left to theCare of Mr. John Webb , of Butleigh in Somersetshire ,who in the Year 1655, sent it Abroad in a small Folio,under the Title of, The Antiquities of Stone-Heng on Sa -lisbury-Plain Restored j and prefix d to it Mr. Jones’ s Ef-figies, eatch’d by Hollar , after a Painting of Vandyke's.As there were but few Copies originally printed, and thesenot much dispers'd during the severe Affliction of the greatPlague, the most part of the Impression was consum d inthe Fire os London the Year following. And by this meansbeing become extremely scarce, and at the same time muchsought after by the Curious, as well for the Singularity ofthe Subject, as the Reputation of the Author, the Copieshave rose in their Value to an immense Degree, and werestill not easy to be procured at any Expence.
Mr. John W‘tbby to whom we owe the Publication ofMr. Jones’s Book, was a Person of Credit and Character,was born in London , brought up at Merckant-TastorsSchool, afterwards resided in Mr. Jones’s Family, marriedhis Kinswoman, was instructed by him in Mathematicks andArchitecture, and design’d his Successor in the Office ofSurveyor-General. But he was prevented by Sir JohnDenham , whose superior Interest procur’d the Reversionof it to himself, and he enjoy’d it till the Day of hisDeath. About three Years after the Publication of Mr.Jones’s Book, Mr. Webb printed an Essay, to prove, Theoriginal Language was that of China 3 which he afterwardsimprov'd and enlarg’d; And the Manuscript is said to be
