KILDRUMMIE.
At some distance to the South of the Castle , a cairn conspicuously marks the spot where,in the reign of James the Fifth, Sir James the Rose fell in combat with Sir John Grseme.
“ Of all the Scottish Northern ChiefsOf his high warlike name,
The bravest was Sir James the Rose,
A knight of mickle fame.” Old Ballad.
With the forfeiture of John Earl of Mar , in 1716, terminated the connexion of that veryancient family with the Castle of Kildrummie, which had so long remained their property, and subsequently of the Erskines, who succeeded to the title and estates in default of heirsmale to the Mars, Earls of Mar.
In the year one thousand seven hundred and thirty-one, the Castle and Estate of Kildrum-mie became the property of John Gordon, of Wardhouse, by purchase from Mr. James Erskine,of Grange, Advocate, and Mr. David Erskine, of Dun, one of the Senators of the College ofJustice, then joint proprietors of the Mar Estates. In the Wardhouse family it has since con-tinued, the present proprietor being John David Gordon, Esq., of Wardhouse and Kildrummie.
