BERGELDIE Castle, formerly the property of the Mowats, but now of theGordons, is romantically placed on the south bank of the Dee; extensivewoods growing to the summits of the lofty eminences to the south-east of thecastle, add to the effect of a scene naturally picturesque, and the summits ofLoch-na-gar, seen in the distance, form a consistent and grand terminationto a Highland landscape. The birch woods are celebrated in the well known Scottish balladof The Birks of Abergeldie and the romantic story of the encounter of the Mowats an$ theCamerons of Brux, gives an interest to the early history of its venerable castle, of which theformer was then the proprietor.
