H E same Year, 1576. someMerchants of London, and otherAdventurers, hoping to disco-ver a North-West Passage toTartary , China, or Cathay , nearer thanthat by the Cape of Good Hope, frequent-ed by the Portuguese , fitted out twoBarks, the Gabriel , in which Mr. For *bisher commanded himself, the MichaelCaptain Matthew Kindersey, and a Pin-nace qf ten Tuns, to attempt this Dis-covery, under the Conduct and Directionof the said Mr. For bisher.

He set Sail from Gravesend , aboutthe Middle of June, and sailing aboutthe North of Scotland, on the eight andtwentieth of July, being in sixty-twoDegrees of Latitude, he discoveredLand, which he supposed to be the Con-tinent of America , called Tierra de La-brador, with Abundance of Ice about it.Within a Cables .Length of the Shoar,he found a Hundred Fathom Water,and not being able to anchor, on thethirtieth, he stood so the East-North-East, as the Coast there lies; with aCurrent setting North-East and South-West : But by Reason of the Ice couldnot come within five Leagues of theShoar.

The tenth of August, he landed ona Desart Island, about a Mile from theContinent ; But made no Stay there.

This is Hackluyf s Account; But othersgive the Relation as follows: That, onthe first of July, having before lost hisPinnace, and th ^Michael being returnedHome, he had Sight of Land, which hedurst not approach, by Reason of theIce, that lay on the Coast. That, on thetwentieth, he discovered a High Land,which he called Queen Elizabeth's Fore ,land, and after that another, with agreat Passage between them, which hecalled Forbijher 's Streight. Here heentered, imagining it to be the Passagebetween Asia and America, on theninth of August, being in the Latitudeof sixty-three Degrees, or thereabouts.
