your own Defence, if you shall beset upon, or otherwise be forced, foryour own Safe-guard, to do it.
XIII. " We will that you deal alto-gether in this Voyage, like good andhonest Merchants, trafficking and ex-changing Ware for Ware, with allCourtesy to the Nations you shalldeal with, as well Ethnicks , as others;And, for thatCause, you shall instructall those that shall go with you, thatwhensoever you, or any of you, shallhappen to come in any Place to Con-ference with the People of thoseParts, that in all your Doings andtheirs, you and they so behave your-selves, towards the said People, asmay rather procure their Friendlhipand good Liking toward you, byCourtesy, than to move them to Of-fence and Misliking; And, especially,you shall have great Care of the Per-formance of your Word and Promiseto them.
XIV. “ We will, that by the Ad-vice of your Assistants, in Placeswhere you and they shall think mostst, you settle, if you can, a Begin-ning of a farther Trade, to be hadhereafter : And from such Places dobring over with you some few Menand Women, if you may, and do alsoleave some one or two, or more, as toyou, and your Assistants, shall seemconvenient, of our Nation, with themfor Pledge, and to learn the Tongueand Secrets of the Country, havingdiligent Care, that in delivering andtaking of Hostages, you deliver notPersonages of more Value than youreceive, but rather deliver mean Per-sons, under Colour of Men of Value,as the Infidels do for the most Partuse. Provided, that you stay notlonger, to make Continuance of far-ther Trade, than shall be expedientfor good Exchange of the Wares atpresent carried with you.
XV. tc You shall have Care, andgive general Warning, that no Per-son of what Calling soever he be,shall take up, or keep to himself, orhis private Use, any Stone, Pearl,Gold, Silver, or other Matter ofCommodity, to be had or found inPlaces, where you shall come; Buthe, the said Person, so seized of suchStone, Pearl, Gold, Silver, or other

Matter of Commodity, shall with allspeed, or so soon as he can, detectthe same, and make Delivery there-of to yourself, or your Vice-Admiral,or Lieutenant, and the Factor appoin-ted for this Voyage, upon Pain ofForfeiture of all the Recompense heis to have for his Service, in this Voy-age, by Share or otherwise; Andfarther to receive such Punishment, asto you and your Assistants, or thegreater Part of them, shall seem good,and otherwise to be punished here, athis Return, if, according to theQuality of his Offence, it shall bethought needful.
XVI. " If the Captains, Merchants,or any other, shall have any Apparel,Jewels, Chains, Armour, or any o-ther Thing whatsoever, which maybe desired in Countries where theyshall traffic k, that it shall not be law-ful for them, or any of them, to traf-fick, or sell any Thing thereof, fortheir private Account: But the sameshall be prized by the most Part ofthose, that shall be in Commission inthe Places where the same may be sorequired, rated at such Value, as itmay be reasonably worth in En-gland, and then sold, to the Profit ofthe whole Voyage, and to go as inAdventure for those to whom it dothappertain.
XVII. " You, yourself, shall, in the"Gallion, keep one Book, and theFactors appointed for the same Shipanother, wherein shall be a just Ac-count kept, as well of the Merchan-dize carried hence, as of those youshall bring Home. And as well atyour setting forth, as from Time toTime, as Exchange shall be made,you shall set your Hand to theirBook, and they theirs to yours, andthe like Order shall you see, that theCaptain and the Factors, in the Ed-
■ ward-Bonaventure , shall Use in theirShip, and the other Captains andFactors, in each other Vessel.
XVIII. <c You shall give StreightOrder to restrain,th at none shall makeany Charts or Descriptions of the saidVoyage, but such as shall be deputedby you, the General, which saidCharts and Descriptions, we thinkmeet. that you, the General, shalltake into your Hands, at your Return,
