T H E Year 1601. was famous foran Expedition of great Honourto the Englijh Nation, tho’ per-formed by an inconsiderableForce. The Fleet, which went on thisgloriousEnterprize, consisted only of twosmall Ships, a Pinnace, and two Shal-lops, commanded in chief by CaptainJVilliam Parker, of Plymouth, and underhim Captain Edward Giles, and Cap-tain Philip IVard, Land-Officers, andCaptain Fugars, Captain Loriman, Cap-tain Ashley, and some other Gentle-men, as Volunteers. The Ships were;
The Prudence, Admiral, of a Hun-dred Tuns, and a Hundred and thirtyMen ; commanded by Mr. Parker him-self.
The Pearl, Vice-Admiral, of sixtyTuns and sixty Men; Captain RobertRawhns.
The Pinnace, of twenty Tuns andeighteen Men.
They set Sail in November, and,off the South Cape, had the Misfor-tune, in a violent Gust of Wind, tolose their Pinnace, with all her Menbut three. Steering their Course fromthence, to the Illands of Cape Verd,they set a Hundred Men on Shoar,and took one of them, called St. Vin-cent, with the Town of the fame Name,and, after having given the Spoil of itto the Soldiers, set Fire to it.
Hence they haled over to the Coast I ^ 01,of the Continent, and coming to LaRancher in, or the Pearl-Fishery, in thesmall Island of Cubagua, they therefound the Governour of Gumana, witha Company of Soldiers.
