lowing Order of Cou'ncil was made.

CoMPiAikT having been made to HisOrder and Majesty, by -great' Numbers of Mer-^onforjup-' chants,' Masters of Ships, and others,preffing Pi- as well as by the several Governours ofrats. His Majesty’s Islands and Plantations, inthe Weft-Indies, That the Pirats aregrown so numerous, that they infest notonly the Seas, near Jamaica, but eventhose of the Northern Continent of A-merica ; And that, unless some effectualMeans be used, the whole Trade fromGreat-Britain to those Parts, will notonly be obstructed, but in imminentDanger of being lost: His Majesty has,upon mature Deliberation in Council,been graciously pleased,. in the firstPlace, to order a proper Force to beemployed for suppressing the said Pira-cies ;j (z) And that nothing may bewanting, for the more .effectually pu ttingan End to. the said Piracies, His Majesty

has also been graciously pleased to issue 1/17-a Proclamation, dated the fifth Instant.

(a) And whereas it has also been repre-sensed to His Majesty, that the. House ofLords had address’.d Her late Majesty, onthis Account, particularly with Respectto the Bahama-Isands ; ( b) But thatthere were not any Means used, in Com-pliance with that Address, .for securingth e said - Bahama-Isands j And that, atthis Time, the Prirats have a Lodgment,,with a Battery, on Harbour-Isand, oneof the Bahamas ; As also, that the usualRetreat, and general Receptacle, forPirats, is at Providence, the Principal ofthose Islands. His Majesty has beenfarther pleased to give Directions, fordislodging those Pirats, who have takenShelter in the said Islands, as well asfor securing those Islands, and makingSettlements and a Fortification there, forthe Safety and Benefit of Trade andNavigation in those Seas, for the fu-ture.

Those at Jamaica, Barbadoes and LeewardJstands, are to joyn, upon Occasion, for annoying

the Pirats, and the Security of the Trade. Andthose at New England , Virginia , and New Perkare to do the like.

{a) By this Proclamation, His Majesty promis-ed His Pardon to any English Weft-India Pirats,who surrender themselves, on or before the fifthof September next, for all Piracies committed be-fore the fifth of January next. And after the saidfifth of September, any of His Majesty’s Oificersby Sea or Land, who take a Pirat, upon his Con-viction, shall have, for a Captain, a HundredPounds : For any other Officer, from a Lieutenantdown to a Gunner, forty Pounds: For an inferiorOfficer, thirty Pounds, and for every private Man,twenty Pounds. Lastly, any Pirat delivering upa Captain or Commander, on or before the sixthof September next, (so as he be convicted) shallhave two Hundred Pounds Reward, to be paid atthe Treasury. ’

(b) Their Lordships set forth, that the Frenchand Spaniards had twice, during that War, over-run and plundered the Bahama-lftands ; Thatthere was no Form of Government there ; Thatthe Harbour of the Island of Providence might beeasily put into a Posture of Defence : And itwould be of dangerous Consequence, should thoseIslands fall into the Hands of an Enemy ; Where-fore the Lords humbly besought Her Majesty, touse such Methods as She should think proper, fortaking the said Islands into Her Hands, in Orderto secure the same to the Crown of this Kingdom,and to the Security and Advantage of the Tradethereof.

(ft) He brought, with him, His Majesty’s Ships,the Bursard , Royal Oak , Orford, Dartmouth ,Pork, Montague, Panther, Exeter, Jersey , and

Worcester ;
