1718. third of February, with His Majesty’sProclamation for suppressing the Pirats.That, thereupon, the Captains Hornogold,Nichols, Burgess, and Lesey, with aHundred and fourteen of their Companies,had furrendred themselves to him, aridaccepted His Majesty’s most graciousPardon ; That others came in daily, andthat he hoped, in a little Time, to dis-perse all the Pirats on that Island, whodrop off as they can meet Opportunitiesof Passage. Captain Jennings, andgreat Part of his Crew went for the Ber-mudas, before Captain Fe arse's Arrival,to surrender ; And Nappin's Sloop wasdaily expected back at Providence ; Be-sides which, he was informed, that therewere but two Pirat-Sloops at Sea, andthat those were gone on the Coast ©fGuinea, and from thence designed forBrasl. By the following Extract of a Letterfrom Carolina, the Pirats were, however,far from being fuppress’d.

gf sjf °f to fail for a Fornight past, and still here,will inform you, that the Reason of hisDelay has been chiefly occasioned by aGang of Pirats, which have infested ourCoasts for these last four or five Weeks;One Crew being no sooner gone off, butanother has appear’d, to the great De-struction of Trade in general, but more

particularly of that of this Province. 1718.We have now eight Sail lying ready todepart, but dare not venture out, andit is almost impossible for any inwardbound Veslel to escape them. Theyare now thicker and more numerous, thanthey were before the issuing forth of theKing’s Proclamation ; So that unless theGovernment take Ipeedy, and moreeffectual Measures for the detecting them,our American Trade will suffer verymuch. {k)

In the Month of Ohloher, Mr. Jef- S j r j 0 jj slseries was ordered to repair to Copenha- Norris re-gen by Land, and to go from thence, turns fromwith Sir John Norris , to attend the t ^’ e 3 tK 'Czar , to Petersburg, with a secret Com-mission ; But before he reached Copenha-gen, Sir John Norris was failed fromthence, on Board the Cumberland, withthe Britijh Squadron, under his Com-mand, and, on the nine and twentieth,of the fame Month, arrived at the Buoyin the Nore, (/) The King of Sweden be-ing killed the thirtieth of November, atthe Siege of Frederick’s Hall, in Norway,

Matters were soon after adjusted, and

thus ended this Northern War. *

(k) Letters from Boston, in New England, ofa something later Date, brought Advice ; ThatCaptain Hume, Commander of His Majesty's Ship,the Scarborough, had taken, and brought into St.Christopher's, a Pirat-ship, of eighteen Guns andsixty Men. That the Men were imprisoned, andThe Ship, which had on Board, the Value offour Thousand Pounds, in Sugar and Tobacco, hadbeen condemned as Prize; And that Teach, thenotorious Pirat-Commander, and his Crew, ofthree Hundred Men, were come on Shoar inNorth Carolina, at a Place called Topsail Inlet,and had surrendered themselves to the Govern-ment.

Letters of the nine and twentieth of August,

from Captain Whitworth, Commander of His Ma-jesty's Ship, Ludlow Castle , attending on the Islandof Jamaica, brought Advice, to the Lords of theAdmiralty, that there had not been, for someTime, any Account of Pirats, in or near the La-titude of that Island.

(/) About the Beginning of this Month, diedVice-Admiral Cornwall , at Lisbon , being on hisReturn homewards.

( m ) They resolved, that a greater Number ofMen, than in the foregoing Years, viz. thirteenThousand, five Hundred, be allowed, for theYear, 1719. at four Pounds, per Man, per Men-sem, for thirteen Months, for the Sea Service,and one Hundred, eighty-feven Thousand, sixHundred and eight and thirty Pounds, seventeenShillings, and fix Pence, halfPenny, for the or-dinary of the Navy, for the fame Year.

(») Soon after, viz. the last of this Month,War was likewise declared'in France against Spain.

so) By this Proclamation, the Time limited forPirats to surrender themselves, in Order to par-take of His Majesty's most Gracious Pardon, wasextended to the first of July, 1719. and the Par-don to be for all Piracies committed before suchTime as they should have received Notice of this

Proclamation.
