896 Geo. I. Naval Expeditions 7 &c. oj the Engliili ? Eec

1726. Morning, being accompanied by SirGeorge Walton, and several Captains, (q)The eighteenth, the Portsmouth- Hospi-tal Ship joined the Fleet irom England, and, the twenty-first, ffie was sent withthe Weymouth, and Gloucester- Tender,to Elfenab, to take on Board the Provi-Veceivesihe *i° nS coming out of England . The twen-Czarina’s ty-third, the Northumberland joined the

Answer to Fleet from England ; And, the next['Letser Hi)', a Ruffian Man of War, of sixand fifty Guns, called the Raphael, cameinto the Bay, having an Officer on. Board, who brought a Letter to theAdmiral, from General-Admiral Apr ax -Sends it to in, inclosing the Czarina's Answer toEngland. His Majesty’s Letter.

T h e Elizabeth having suffered Dam-age, by running against a Rock, nearLands-Ort, in Sweden, Sir Charlesthought it proper ffie should be careened, and, therefore, sent her, for that End,the seven and twentieth, to Copenhagen, and with her, the Assistance, Jest herDamage might prove worse at Sea;And, by this Opportunity, he sent oneof His Majesty’s Messengers with hisDispatches, and the Czarina 's Letter, for Copenhagen, in his Way to England. The fame Day, the Port-Mahon sailedwith Dispatches for Helfingfors, from

whence ffie returned with the like, the-se cond of July. H

Sir Charles Wager having received ^the Czarina's Answer to His Majesty’sLetter, and transmitted it to England, waited, in the same Station, His Maje-sty’s farther Orders and Instructions, (j)

The Port-Mahon having been dis-patched, the fifth, to Helfingfors, return-ed thence, the ninth, with instructions toSixCharles, dated the seventeenth of June.

Prince Menzikojf 'coming from Rigato Revel, the nineteenth of July, SixCharles Meager sent Captain Haddock a-stioar, with a Compliment to him, anda Letter. The Captain was treated withgreat Civility by the Prince, who, thenext Day, returned an Answer to SirCharles's Letter, by the Baron de Lu-braz, Colonel Engineer, in the RussianService. ( 7 )

The 'seven and twentieth, the Wey-mouth, PortJniQuth- H ofpital, and Gloucef-ter -Tender returned from Elfenab, withWine, Butter, Cheese, &c. two Shipsbeing arrived, some Time before, fromBourdeaux, with Brandy, to be issuedout, in Proportions, instead of Beer. The thirty-first, Sir Charles Wager madea Line of Battle, in Conjunction withthe Danes, (w) The

' (q) Sir Charles saluted the Danip Rear-Ad-

miral with eleven Guns, st Going away ; And hesaluted Sir Charles with fifteen, at his Leaving hisShip.

(1) In the mean Time, from all the Intelligencehe had received, he judged the Rvjsians did not in-tend to make any Attempts this Lear, their Na-val Strength being inferior to his. They had, in-deed, more Ships, than they had ever before fit-ted out, but they could not man thenjj with anytollerable Number of Seamen, without disablingthose already man’d : But, on the other Hand, they were doing every Thing they could to forti-fy their Ports, and defend their Ships. At Revel, they had made a new Battery, and lay Day andNight on Board their Ships, in the Mole, andupon their Batteries, for fear of a Surprize. How-ever, notwithstanding this /e^ioufy, Sir Charles(a) The Line of Battle was as fThe Danes to lead with the Starboard, and th

stager had liberty to furnisli his Squadron, withfresh Provisions, as often as he pleased; A certainSign they were willing to court our Friendship ;And a plainer Conviction of this Truth was theCzarina’s Declaration, of the twenty-first of June, wherein She gives all English Merchants, tradingin and to Her Territories, to understand, that not-withstanding any Hostilities, that might be commit-ted, by His Majesty’s Fleet, they should continueto enjoy Her Protection, as heretofore, and notbe injured or damaged, in their Persons, Goods,Ships, or Possessions.

(t) SlR Charles had given Captain Haddock Di-rections, to invite the Prince to dine with him, thenext Day ; But he excused it, saying he was oblig-ed to set out immediately for Petersburg , havingthat Day received two Expresses to hasten his De-parture,lows:
