SPINNING—KNITTING—MARRIAGE.

(< But thee, Atrides, in that dangerous hour,

“ The gods forget not, nor thy guardian power,

“ Pallas assists, (and weaken’d in its force,)

“ Diverts the weapon from its destin’d course ;

“ So, from her babe, when slumber seals his eye,

“ The watchful mother wafts th’ envenom’d fly.

“ Just where his belt with golden buckles join’d,

“ Where linen folds the double corslet lin’d.

“ She turn’d the shaft, which, hissing from above,

“ Pass’d the broad belt, and through the corslet drove;

“ The folds it pierc’d, the plaited linen tore,

“ And raz’d the skin, and drew the purple gore.” Pope.

From what appears in the subsequent, as well as theformer part of this article, we submit, that not only the ge-neral manufacture of cloth, both woollen and liuen, hath beenestablished, and if this is made out, the anterior existence ofthe other subsidiary arts of spinning, weaving, &c. are alsosubstantiated. We should add, because it belongs to ourpeculiar province, that we have hieroglyphical symbols in theBritish Museum, of the practice of the artizans of Memphis ,Thebes, &c. in Egypt, but of Memphis in particular, whichdenote the various operations of the manufacture of cloths;and upon a monument 3579 years old.

With regard to Knitting , we refer our readers to a sub-sequent article expressly upon stocking manufacture; it willbe found in the Last Period.

Numerous arts have been discovered by mere accident.As we are told, the very valuable operation ofyeWt-making,—which, we should think, from the term, was of German in-vention, but that we recollect innumerable of our ancientinhabitants were Germans , who, of course, did not leave theirlanguage, the Teutonic behind them,—was discovered bya British sovereign, whose feet being very chill in winter,he had wool put into his shoes; the moisture there contracted,the natural heat of the body, with the action to which thiswool was exposed, between the feet and the shoe or sandal,caused the fleecy substance to consolidate; whence theorigin of that very necessary article, the Hat.

LOVE—MARRIAGE.

The sacred and solemn ceremony of marriage was ori-ginally sanctioned by the immediate commands of Omnipo-tence itself,-—as the Mosaic writings infonn us:—“So“ Jehovah created man in his own image; in the image“ of God created he him, male and female created he them.“ And Jehovah sanctified them, and God said unto“ them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth,”&c. Gen. i. 27, 28.
