as the most favoured people upon earth, with respect topersonal beauty, saying-, they have the shortest 5 and bestarched foreheads, and that only upwards and towards theeyebrows, rectilinear, with full medullary noses, frequentlyround, but very seldom pointed, and lips equally large, withthe addition of full round chins: still greater perfectionsare attributed to the eyes of the English , which are said topossess the expression of manly strength, generosity, libe-rality, and frankness ; to which apparent indication in theface the eyebrows greatly contribute. With complexionsinfinitely fairer than the Germans , they have the advantageof escaping the numerous wrinkles found in the faces ofthe latter, and their general contour is noble and com-manding.

Judging from our ladies, whom he had seen in this coun-try, and from numerous portraits of others, he was led tosay, they appeared to him to be wholly composed of nerveand marrow; tall and slender in their forms, gentle, andas distant from coarseness and harshness as earth fromheaven!

We will supply a thought he left unfinished, and say,—Benignity and virtue are their characteristics. In beauty,they are confessed supreme! Here, their face is a certainindex of their mind.

His own countrywomen, (Sicitzers,) he found to havemany varieties. Those of Zurich are found to be gene-rally meagre, and of the middle size, and either corpulentor very thin. If we pursue this subject further, we shallfind the people of Lapland and parts of Tartary are of avery diminutive stature, savage countenances, Hat faces,broad noses, large mouths, thick lips, peaked chins, witheyes yellow-brown, almost approaching to black, and lidsretiring upwards ; the grossest manners, and stupid beyondcredibility; but of all human varieties, the natives of NewHolland seem thq most debased and miserable, tall andslender, to add ta deformity, thick lips, large noses, widemouths, they are taught from infancy to keep their eyesalmost shut, to avoid the insects which continually swarmaround them.

The more favourable side of this picture of nationalphysiognomy, exhibits the people of Cachemire, Geor-gians, Circassians , and Mingrelians; neat, noble and formed
