mease will be the profits accruing to the proprietors! They must besuch as to make every one repent that he had not the foresight and pru-dence to lodge his whole fortune in so glorious an undertaking.

" I will now proceed to shew the expence of making and completingthat part of the canal from Bridgeford, in the county of Stafford, byStafford, Wolefly-bridge, and Bishton, in the said county; thence byBurton to Wilden Ferry, on the river Trent, in the county of Derby,being one fall from Bridgeford, south-eastward to Wilden Ferry. Theincome of that part of the canal (which I must term the eastern branch)is not very considerable, but will chiefly arise from the carriage ofcorn and all sorts of grain towards Wilden Ferry ; and the carriagefrom Wilden back will be somewhat considerable in London goodsbrought to Hull by sea, and thence along this cut to the inland townseast of Stafford, being not many in number, as most of the countiyabout Stafford will be supplied from Bristol or Liverpool. Thedistance from Bridgeford to Wilden Ferry is forty-three miles; and theincome to the proprietors may every year amount to the sum of twothousand six hundred and seventeen pounds ten shillings for tonnage ofgoods pasting on the canal : the proprietors will therefore be enabled toborrow at five per cent. as before mentioned, the sum of sifty-twothousand three hundred fifty pounds ; and the estimate of the expenceof making and completing the said eastern branch will amount to thesum of forty-eight thousand pounds, including the things necessary.So that if the proprietors borrow the said sum of sifty-two thousandthree hundred and fifty pounds, the interest will amount at five percent. to two thousand four hundred pounds, and there will remain thesum of two hundred seventeen pounds ten shillings to be divided amongthe proprietors as the profits of the canal ; and if the law would allowme the appellation, would be more than an income of five per cent.per annum. I must also add, that this income will greatly and im-mensely increase whenever Wolverhampton and Birmingham shall havecuts into it as before described (which is now completed).
