The object of this design is not local, it is not confined to a fewtowns or counties. A great and general diminution of the price ofland carriage, between the inland counties and fea-ports, will contributemost effectually to increase the cultivation of our lands, to reduce theprice of our manufactures, and to give us a superiority over our'mostformidable competitors at foreign markets.

And when the branches that are already intended, and others thatmay be useful and practicable, are joined to this canal, the trade of a con-siderable part of the kingdom will receive the advantage of this newconveyance. It is therefore to be wished, that the main trunk may beterminated so as to facilitate commerce in the best manner, and such asshall most easily admit of further extension. For these purposes, theundertakers of this intended navigation are desirous that it may be ter-minated in a free part of the river Trent at one end, and carried to apart of the river Mersey at the other, which is not liable to the inter-ruption of neap tides. By which means a communication may also beopened with the great manufacturing town of Manchester, and itsneighbourhood ; from whence the canal may be extended over theriver into Lancashire, to the general benefit of the interior parts of thatcounty, as well as the port of Liverpool, and of all the towns andplaces through the whole extent of the navigation.

That it would be a very great limitation of its utility, and conse-quently a public injury, to mutilate this great canal, by terminating it atBurton and Northwich, we presume will appear to every impartial per-son, from the following facts and considerations:

By means of the junction of the great trunk with the duke ofBridgewater’s canal near Preston Brook, merchandise will be conveyedfrom that part of the navigation near Middlewich to Manchester, with-out the interruption of a single lock, or the expence, damage, or delays
