RIVER O U S E.
LEWIS NAVIGATION.
Particulars of an Aft , £sV. for improving the Navigation of theRiver Oufe , between Newhavcn-bridgc and Lewis-bridge , in th cCounty of Sujfex ; and for the better draining of the Low Landslying in Lewis and Laughton Levels , in the said County. 1791.
PREVIOUS to pasting this act, the river between Newhaven.bridge and Lewis was navigable only for small barges at particu-lar times of tide ; but, by widening, deepening, and some newcuts, it is proposed to make the river constantly navigable forboats of larger burthen. It is intended so to deepen the river as axordinary neap tides to admit vessels drawing four feet water, upto Lewis-bridge ; whereby, of course, the trade and commerce onthe same will be much accommodated and increased. For thispurpose the trustees have extensive powers to clean, scour, en-large, widen, straighten, &c. the said river, and to make newcuts, and for this purpose may use the land adjoining, or withintwo thousand yards of the river ; may take soil, gravel, &c. forthe purpose of embanking ; and may throw or cast soil, &c.on the adjoining grounds.
A great purpose intended also, is to drain certain lands lying tothe east of Lewis, called Laughton Levels ; and this is intended tobe done by embanking and straightening the river up to Lewis-bridge, and at certain places higher up the river.
