gerford is nine miles, with feventy-two feet rife ; from Hun-gerford to Crofton is fix miles, with one hundred and fourfeet rife; the summit level from Crofton to Devizes, is twentymiles; from Devizes to near Bulkington, is three miles anda quarter, with two hundred and seventy-one feet fall; fromBulkington to near Paxcroft, is five miles, and level; fromPaxcroft to Trowle Bridge, at Trowbridge, is three miles,with thirty-five feet and a half fall; from Trowbridge to nearBathampton, is ten miles and a half, and level; from thenceto the river, is three quarters of a mile, with sifty-six feet anda half fall; from thence to the old Bridge in the town of Bath,is two miles and a quarter, with six feet fall; the branch toCalne and Chippenham is fourteen miles five furlongs inlength ; viz. from the junction with the canal at Foxhanger toChippenham, is ten miles and a half, and level; from GreatLodge to Calne, is four miles one furlong, with eighteen feetrife in the last half mile.

The waste water from the head level is to be carried off,one moiety down the Bedwin Vale, at Crofton; the othermoiety down the water-courfe at Horton, to flow down theriver Bourn to Salilbury. The company are to spread thegravel, rubbish, &c. on the adjoining ground, in a propermanner. The banks of the canal in the parish of Bathwickare to be raised, and the sides puddeled, to prevent damage byfloods, &c. the canal also is to be puddeled in other places,where necessary.

The act of parliament for this most important inland navi-gation was obtained in 1794> an ^ incorporates the subscribersby the title of " The Company of Proprietors- of the Kennet

and

Kennet andAvon Canal.
