HISTORY OF MARINE ARCHITECTURE.

inquisitive light, is at least entertaining, while in many other respects it is bothuseful and instructive. It not only serves to point out the gradual depreciation ofthe value of specie, as the current quantity of it became, through various causes, encreased, but it affords very accurate information of that comparative rank, then held by persons holding different stations in the service, which has under-gone little or no alteration from that time down even to the present moment.

On comparing the number of king’s ships with the list given in the indenture, made during the preceding year, between his Majesty and Sir Edward Howard,it will be found,'that the royal navy was augmented, during that short period, more than one third, namely, from fifteen vessels to twenty-three ; and that, independent of those to which the name of king’s ships properly belonged, there were twenty added to them, which were hired from different Englishsubjects, and seven from foreigners, making in the whole exactly fifty sail.

The CHARGES of the ARMY by SEA, of our Sovereign Lord King Henrythe Eighth, beginning the first Day of March, the fourth Year of his mostnoble reign, unto the first Day of April, the next following, (the first and lastDays included) accounting twenty-eight Days for the Month.
