HISTORY OF MARINE ARCHITECTURE.
91
From the preceding, as well as the ensuing list, it appears to have been aprevalent custom, for the different commanders to provide from their owninterest a certain portion of the crew, according to the rate of the ship. Thiswas done without exception, Uut in the cases of the Jenet, Swallow, andSweepstakes, all small vessels, whose crews amounted not to one hundred meneach, and were the whole of that description which were employed in the arma-ment. It was a common practice also, as before observed, for the friends andrelatives of those who commanded vessels of the first rate, or class, to contributetheir assistance, in this respect, where the influence of the commander himselfdid not appear sufficient to effect the purpose. The Lord of Denny, forinstance, in the sixth year of King Henry the Eighth, raised two hundred menfor the Trinity Sovereign, though that ship was commanded at the time by thecaptains Courtenay and Cornwall; and for the Gabriel Royal, of which ship SirWilliam Trevellian, or, as it is otherwise spelt, Trevenyan, was captain, the bishopof Exeter, with the lords Arundel and Sturton, severally procured a number ofmen. The different quotas furnished by various loyal and patriotic personages, will be best explained by the annexed list, which, it may be supposed, comprisesall the king’s ships employed at sea during the fifth year of his reign, 1514.
