Taken 1781, from the French.
A number of ships, which continued in service till the middle of the eighteenth century, had been built during the..preceding. Many of these were latterly reduced in their rate, in order to eafe them of the weight of metal , which as theybecame old, was thought too great for them. The Namur and Prince-George, originally constructed to carry ()0 guns, werereduced to 80 ; the Chichester of 80 was reduced to 70 , with many others, which experienced degradation according tothe same scale : nor was this diminution of their force owing only to tlieir age, hut inlet iorilv ot dimensions, when com-pared with those of the later built ships.
In so extensive a List as the preceding, it is impossible' but that some errors must unavotd ddv have taken place ; the--■utmost possible care has, however, been taken to abridge them as far as was possible; and many charges, which mightotherwise have been supposed instances of neglect, will, in all probability, he found parried, by a reference to tl-.c subse-quent table.
