The continued bowing line, and bold re-lief of the engaged column, entablature, and arcdoubleau of this enormous vault, may be contrastedwith the insipid flat pannelling and pilasters of St.Peter’s; while the mild and amiable piety of itsfounder , the idolater Antoninus , is an antithesis tothat of the Christian and most holy father, Giulio theSecond.*

* It was a facetious act of the Duke of Ferrara to convert thebronze statue of this pope, cast by Michael Angelo, into a piece ofartillery, which he called Giulio.
