FRESHWATER.
of the chalk with flints, or whether there may not be someportions of the lower chalk. I was informed by the fishermen, that a sandstone rock appears above water at ebb tide, at a smalldistance south of Scratchell’s bay. This is not an improbablecircumstance; as it is exactly the spot where the stratum of greensand may be expected. The bottom of the sea, at that part, con-sists of black mud; probably arising from the dark grey marl. The place is much resorted to by the fishermen, from all thesouth side of the island, for catching skate and thornbacks, whichthey employ as bait for the lobster fishery.
T1 le road to Freshwater church presented no geological phe-nomenon of importance ; and from this place I propose to proceedto Alum bay and the Needles.
I am, &c.
