2 54 Mechanik Powers. Book IX.Finally, to the facillitating of this motion of the globe theimpreſt Impetus of the tube concurs to the oppoſite part ofthe motion of the globe, for it is found by experience, thatthe Globe deſcends more ſwift on an inclined plane, beingmoved(for example) from the Eaſt towards the Weſt, if inthe mean while that it deſcends, the inclination remaining theſame, the plane be transfer d by an oppoſite motion, ro wit, from the Weſt towards the Eaſt; ſince therefore while theGlobe deſcends, by the inclined part of the Tube from G inE, or alſo while it aſcends further from E in H, the Tubeby the Circumvolution is moved by an oppoſite motion fromH towards E and G, it come to pals from ſuch motion, orfrom the oppoſite Impetus of the Tube, it acquires a greatervelocity: But like wiſe this muſt be obſer ved, that as often asthe oppoſite Impetus of the Tube, or of che inclined plane a-vails to the velocity of the motion of the globe, ſo often theGlobe fſuffers ſome rubing or wearing witk the plarie that liesunder it: Wherefore from the beginning to the eiid, all thereaſon of the motion of the Globe in the ſpiral Tube of theſorezv, ſeems to be founded on the foreſaid adherence, or re-ſiſtance of bodies in the contact of ſuperficies. And what wehave ſaid concerning the Globe, the ſame may altogether beſaid of water, or of any other body, notwithſtanding wehave made uſe of the Globe, in the. example, becauſe if theexperiment be made, ag we have oftentimes done in it, alltheſe things clearly appear, which hitherto we havé ſaid; And that che Globe may be manifeſt tõ the. eye, and the reaſonof its motion may be obſerved, either we muſt make uſe of aglaſs Tube, or the ſecret hollow channel about the Cylindermuſt be of tranſparent ſtone to ſee through; or you maygaſily put a. double wyre about the ſpiral Cylinder, ſo thatthat Iron thred, or wyxe, touch not the. iner ade be ſtandabove it about half an Inch, and the ſame diſtance alſo betweenit ſelf, and therefore ſome quadrangles intercept the ſpace ofway, on which the Globe is placed as it were on a channel,or groove. From what hath been ſaid tis manifeſt, in the firſt place, how the motion of bodies which are raifed by means of thisEngin, are reduced to motion by an inclined plane.
